When choosing a turkey it isn’t always the best idea to choose the biggest bird. But, size does matter when it comes to turkeys. Plan on 1 to 1 ½ pounds of turkey per guest. Just remember one important thing - Too much is better than not enough!!! It is important to ensure no one leaves your feast hungry. Plus, the worst thing that can happen by over estimating the amount of turkey you need is leftovers. Who doesn’t like leftover turkey?
We recommend that you buy a frozen turkey. Frozen turkeys are flash frozen. This means the turkeys are frozen so quickly that no ice crystals formed on them. Ice crystals can damage a turkey during the thawing process.
You want to be sure to buy your frozen turkey early to ensure you have enough time to thaw your turkey. Generally, it takes about 3 days to thaw a turkey. A good rule of thumb is 5 hours of thawing per pound of turkey. Frozen turkeys are usually the most cost effective option.
But, ask yourself a question before you go out and buy your turkey, “will it fit in my freezer or refrigerator?” Frozen turkeys tend to be larger and more economical than a fresh turkey. But, you need room in the freezer if you buy your turkey too early. Plus, you’ll need room in your refrigerator to thaw your turkey. Thawing your turkey outside a refrigerator can be dangerous, since it may cause bacterial growth.
Not everyone has the space to store a turkey. We allow you to choose and buy a turkey weeks ahead of time. We’ll store your turkey for you. We’ll even thaw it out in our meat cooler and let you pick it up when you're ready to roast it.
